MSW class of 2012

I was recently accepted to Wayne's MSW program. I'm really glad to see an LJ community for Wayne because I definitely  used the LJ for my undergrad. I just wanted to introduce myself and see if there were any other social workers here. I do have a question though- in your experience, is it better to live on campus or off campus? I'll probably be on campus most days because I'm doing the 2 year program. I'm hesitant because my boyfriend lived on campus (DeRoy apartments) and overpaid for his tiny efficiency apartment. His apartment was not in good condition; there was a bedbug infestation and he constantly had to move his stuff for exterminators and health inspections. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Congrats on your acceptance to Wayne State! I just completed my undergrad there, and it was a great experience. I spent some years commuting from the suburbs and others living downtown, and I have to say, I really enjoyed being able to roll out of bed and go to class. I personally would not recommend living in Deroy or Chatsworth, since I have heard the same kind of problems that you mentioned. I would recommend looking for an apartment south of Warren, between Cass and Third (try Hancock, Forest, and Prentis streets). I lived in this area and rent was affordable, I had enough space, and most importantly, I felt pretty safe.

If you're willing to spend the money, the Park Shelton on Kirby is a beautiful and secure place to live. Also, they're building some new campus apartments on Cass, right next to the College of Social Work, so that might be convenient.

If you would rather not live in Detroit, there are many students that find an apartment in nearby Royal Oak and commute from there.

I hope this helps you out! Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks for responding. Does Wayne have any on-campus housing/dorms for grad students? I'm looking at apartments in Allen Park but would be willing to live in on-campus housing as long as I felt safe and the building was clean.
Deroy and Chatsworth are the on-campus housing apartments for grad students, I don't think there are any other ones that are grad student only.

Another option might be the University Club apartments, I was visiting a friend there today. The hallways and apartment were clean and the doors were locked so all visitors had to be buzzed in.
I'm going to Wayne right now in the PharmD program. I can say that quite a few of my friends live downtown. One lives in the park shelton (a studio apartment and pays $850) and another lives in a building just west of woodward on mack.. i'm not sure what it's called. She also has a studio and only pays $550. So look around if you're interested in living downtown - the prices vary a lot.

I personally couldn't do it, I like having my space (I have a 2 bedroom apt to myself - 1 bedroom/1 office :p) for $700... so I commute from Harrison Township (about 20-25 minute drive - 94 straight down) and I don't mind it at all :) So think about what you really want, if you want an itty bitty living space for more $$ and no commute, or a larger apt for less $ and a short commute. Hope this helps and good luck!!
